We explain some basic information about Big Bags. See also our section of Frequently Asked Questions.
Are there other names for Big Bags?
FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container) is the technical name and most commonly used internationally to designate the Big Bags. In Spain they are known as Big Bags or Sacas, but in other latitudes they are known as Jumbo Bag, Maxi Saco, Super Saco, Bulk Bag, Tonne Bag, IBC or M3 Saco, among others.
What are Big Bags used for?
The Big Bag is ideal for storing and transporting bulk products and usually contains 3 main types of items:
- Powdered or dusty items such as cement, flours, pigments, mineral powders…
- Grain or granular items such as fertilizers, dry food, industrial salts…
- Articles in paste or pasty format such as muds, slurries, purees, wet mineral masses…
It is widely used for the management of rubble, soil, transport of aggregates, fertilizers, fertilizers, among others. sectors. With excellent recycling and reconditioning possibilities, it saves space, since when empty it hardly occupies any volume and weighs very little compared to other types of containers.
When should they include an inner sleeve or lamination?
The fabric with which the Big Bags are made is not watertight or impermeable. Different layers can be added to provide a higher level of watertightness and/or additional protection required for each product to be contained.
In general it could be said that…
| Type of content | Status | Requires additional layer (Inner sleeve or Lamination) |
|---|---|---|
| Dusty | Dry powder | Yes, preferably. |
| Granular | Dry solid | Optional. |
| Pasty | Semi-liquid | Yes, mandatory. |
In some cases, especially for hazardous or polluting products, the two additional layers (inner sheath and lamination) are necessary, including other protective or insulating elements.
How many kg can be loaded in a Big Bag?
A bag Big Bag, weighing just 700 grams in some cases, is capable of holding and suspending a ton. Therefore, Big Bags can carry a lot of weight considering how light they are in themselves.
The most common is that a Big Bag can carry up to 1,000 kg, i.e. 1 ton, but there are those that can carry up to 1,250 kg, 1,500 kg and in some cases up to 2,000 kg. There are also bags Big Bag with SWL lower than 500 Kg for example, which are used for loads of products or lighter items such as clothes or vegetable waste or for smaller Big Bags and therefore with less capacity.
Safely moving and storing (sometimes from a height) these considerable weights requires proper handling. It is essential to consult the mandatory information label on each Saca Big Bag, where you will find handling instructions, maximum load weights (SWL) and lifting possibilities.
The safety factor of a Saca Big Bag establishes a safety margin so that it can be safely loaded to its maximum working weight, even if that maximum weight is accidentally exceeded. It also defines how many times a Big Bag can be used. Most of them are single trip, but there are also multi-purpose and multi-purpose-repairable (see Multipurpose or Reusable Big Bags). It is therefore essential to follow all the recommendations and safety regulations for the bags Big Bag.
What are the dimensions of a Big Bag?
The Big Bag cubic meter (m3) is often referred to as the most common, which is supposed to have a base of 100×100 cm and a height of 100 cm, but the truth is that the most common Big Bags measure 90×90 cm in base and 100 cm in height.
Anyway, there are Big Bags of many different sizes: from 45×45 cm bases to transport gardening elements, for example, to some special ones for asbestos with a 320×120 cm base. On the other hand, the heights can range from 45 cm to more than 2 meters high.
Measurements can be taken from the outside of the Big Bag (external measurements are the most commonly used) or from the inside of the Big Bag’s cargo space (internal measurements). Protruding elements of the Big Bag body such as loops, possible top skirts, or charge or discharge spouts must also incorporate their dimensions into the specifications of Big Bag, but do not add to the body dimensions of Big Bag.
If a Container Liner could also be considered a type of Big Bag, these would be the largest of all, with dimensions that can exceed 17 meters long, almost 2.5 meters wide and about 3 meters high, with potential cargo volumes of about 120 m3.
What parts make up a Big Bag?
The fundamental part of Big Bags is the body, but they require other elements or components to be loaded, transported, stored and unloaded properly and safely. The main ones are the type of open top, the type of discharge spout or bottom and the fastening elements, typically the type and number of loops: open top, flat bottom, different types and diameters of charge and discharge spouts, loops on the edges or on the side walls, 1, 2 or 4 loops (as the Single Loop Big Bags) are the most common options that can be combined together to create Sacks Standard Big Bags or completely customized for each customer.

How is a Big Bag made?
There is still no machine or loom capable of making a Big Bag in a fully automated way. The fabric used for its fabrication (which can be made with different types of looms) is normally made of woven polypropylene yarns. With this fabric, one or several people sew and assemble manually with sewing machines the different elements that the bags can have Big Bag. For this reason, most Big Bags are manufactured in countries such as China or India, although there are also manufacturers in many other countries.
Responding to the requirements of resistance, durability, ventilation necessary for the product to be contained, food or industrial regulations, even visual aspect, the PP raffia fabric with which the Bags are made Big Bag can have different characteristics: more or less thickness, grammage, some additives, UV treatment, lamination(Big Bags Laminated), color, ventilated (Big Bags with Ventilated or Ventilated o Big Bags Filtering or Open Fabric Big Bags), conductivity (Antistatic or Conductive Big Bags), printing, approvals (ADR Approved Big Bags), among others. Even different parts of the same Big Bag can be made of different fabrics.
Is there an ecological Big Bag?
Currently, the vast majority of Big Bags are made of polypropylene (which may be pure or virgin) or may contain a percentage of recycled components. In the latter case, Big Bags must be manufactured and tested with special care, as recycled materials are less resistant than virgin materials.
In any case, a Saca Big Bag is 100% recyclable and should always be properly managed for recycling. It can also be safely destroyed by incineration.
However, there are alternatives to polypropylene that are much more environmentally friendly, and nowadays it is possible to manufacture bags Big Bag with all the safety guarantees with materials such as rPET. This comes entirely from recycled bottles, thus closing the full circle of environmentally friendly recycling. Check out our Ecological Big Bags made of recycled rPET.
